Garden at the Farm
This fun project in the Capay valley creates a variety of gardens around a new house for the owner of a Lavender farm. The one-acre residential garden is surrounded by rows of Lavender on three sides and views of the rolling hills beyond. The front yard consists of a simple circular driveway and no-mow fescue plantings, with a large area on the side set apart as an informal Oak woodland garden of locally native plants with high habitat value. The back yard is designed for outdoor living and entertaining in connection with a nice shaded back porch. The highlight of the design is a curved seat wall that weaves its way through the back yard and defines many different garden spaces, with an outdoor living and dining area at its heart. Beyond the curved wall is an informal gravel space for Bocce and similar games, with a shade pavilion for seating at one end. A succulent garden and espaliered fruit trees form a low boundary between the residential garden and the Lavender fields, and a series of raised beds and fruit trees in the corner round out this lovely and productive landscape.
