Valley Panorama
This wonderful hillside site has panoramic views of the lower Napa Valley and out to the San Francisco Bay. The house is set into the hillside and stretches out across the slope to maximize views from every room. The view is further enhanced with a vanishing edge pool and a series of terraces with trees for shade. The driveway approaches the house from uphill, planted with large old Olive trees, Catmint, and California Fescue on the septic leach field. The path to the front door is a beautiful and dramatic set of steps that bridge over a rock outcropping and a reflecting pool. The rock outcropping is used to frame a courtyard like space, complemented by plantings that like rocky soil such as Sonoma Sage and Sedum. Other native grassland and chaparral plantings are used around the property, but held away from the house to provide wildfire protection. A lawn was included along the back of the house, in part because of wildfire concern. Further down the slope there are more native plantings and relocated boulders from the site that transition the gardens into the natural surroundings.
